Chapter 3. Modifying an Existing System

IN THIS CHAPTER

This chapter explains what kind of things to look out for when modifying an existing system. To ensure a good development process, it's a good idea to take the time to identify and monitor possible performance and footprint problem areas early on as well as throughout the development cycle. Although it is often desirable to restart a project from scratch, you might not always have that opportunity because of constraints on, for example, time or budget. This chapter shows how to work with preexisting development problems—for instance, software that has to operate under new or more restrictive requirements. An example of this is existing code which is reused. The functionality might be correct, while the existing code is too slow or too large for the new application. This chapter looks at what developers can and should do when such problems arise during development.
