Primarily, I wish to acknowledge the continuous support and guidance of Dr Gwil Roberts. His dependability and unwavering enthusiasm, affection and collaborative intelligence have carried me forward each step of the way, particularly in moments of uncertainty and self-doubt.

Those who play a vital role in facilitating development often go unseen. Not unlike the coach, the role of the commissioning editor can at times seem to be that of an unsung hero, or heroine in my case. Without the guidance, expert knowledge, sensitivity and creative insight of Samantha Jackson, my commissioning editor at Pearson Education, quite simply, this book would not have been written. Samantha’s unique contribution is to bring out the very best. The greatest gift has been meeting an inspiring editor who, at the time of completing this book, has become a treasured friend.
