Grouping and Changing the Order of Objects

There are two handy functions that help you work with objects on your slide. Grouping allows you to group several objects, such as the different objects that form a drawing or logo, together into a single object. You can then work with that single object to format, move, or resize it. Also, when you have several objects on a slide they may overlap each other, either to save space or to create a design effect. In that case you should know how to control the order of objects on a page, that is, which object appears on top and which seems to fall underneath another.

Group and Ungroup Objects

  1. Click an object to select it.

  2. Press Ctrl and click on one or more other objects you want to group together.

  3. Click the Drawing Tools, Format tab or Picture, Format tab, depending on the type of object.

  4. Click the Group button and choose Group.

  5. To ungroup the objects, select the grouped object, click the Group button, and then click Ungroup.

A grouped object has one outline surrounding all the objects and a single rotation handle. After objects are grouped, you can resize, move, rotate, and change the fill color of all objects at once, and so on.

To quickly select multiple objects on a slide, click and drag across them; a highlighted box surrounds the objects. Release your mouse, and all objects within the area you highlighted will be selected (not including placeholders).

Change Object Order

  2. Click the Drawing Tools, Format tab or Picture Tools, Format tab, depending on the type of object you’re working with.

You can click the arrow on either the Bring to Front or Send to Back button and choose Bring Forward or Send Backward if you want to move an object only one position forward or backward in a stack of objects, rather than all the way to the front or back of the stack.
