As a DBA, you are responsible for creating and managing Oracle databases and services within your organization. Oracle provides a comprehensive and cohesive set of tools to help the DBA perform these tasks. It is important for you to understand these tools and how to use them properly.

This chapter discusses the Oracle Enterprise Management Framework and explains how you can use this framework to administer the entire Oracle environment. It also describes how to use the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant to create and remove Oracle databases and how you can use templates to create databases.

In addition, we'll explore how to start and stop the Oracle Enterprise Manager control interface and the iSQL*Plus interface. You will use these tools extensively to manage the Oracle environment.

We'll describe the various database startup and shutdown options and explain the circumstances under which you use these options. We will explain what parameter files are, the different types of parameter files, and how you can manage parameter files. Finally, we will discuss how to locate, manage, and view the database alert log, and explain the contents of the alert log.
