About the author

Peter Caplehorn RIBA HonMCIAT is a chartered architect with more than 35 years’ experience in the construction industry. For more than 15 years he has engaged with the wider industry in a number of key national roles and has represented the industry in many media positions.

For 14 years Peter was Technical Director at the architectural practice Scott Brownrigg, but in 2014 he took up the role of Deputy Chief Executive at the Construction Products Association. Peter’s role includes the development of many current themes across the industry, including better, smarter regulations and standards, innovation, Building Information Modelling (BIM), sustainable construction and energy efficiency.

He has expert knowledge of UK construction regulations and health and safety and is currently working closely with the RIBA, British Standards Institution, BRE, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Health and Safety Executive. He has been central to the delivery of several British Standards and Publicly Available Specifications.

Peter was a RIBA Council Member from 2009 to 2014 and a founder member of the Designers’ Initiative on Health and Safety (DIOHAS). In 2015 he was awarded honorary membership of CIAT, and he has been a CIBSE associate member since 2010. His current industry roles include:

• RIBA Health and Safety Champion
• CIC Executive Board member and Health and Safety Champion
• Building Regulations Advisory Committee deputy chair
• BSI: Standards Policy and Strategy Committee member and chair of the Construction and Built Environment Committee
• BRE Standing Panel member

• BIM4Regs chair.

Currently, he is involved with the use of BIM and health and safety, is a member of the Health in Construction leadership group and is working with the Bonfield Review on energy efficiency.
