Wisdom as a Process

Image

With inquiry and reflection on a variety of experiences, you can develop your capacity to make wise choices. In order to develop wisdom, you must engage with both surface and deep reflection and the habits of reflective practice. Reflection should not be an end in itself. Reflection is connected with the cycle of experience, and you should continue to grow in experience to deepen in reflection.

Wisdom is more than a trait or ability—it is a process. Wise people are those who are acutely aware of their limitations. Reflective practice will help you build up a broader repertoire of responses so that you won’t be tempted to fall back on the familiar ones. By thinking critically about your values, your behaviors, and your role as leader, you will begin to see a broad range of possible responses and wisely choose the ones that will work best.
