Glossary Terms

Active Directory Federation Service (AD FS)

This is an industry-supported web services architecture designed to assist the single sign-on (SSO) service to authenticate users to multiple, related web applications over a single online session, securely sharing digital identity and entitlement rights across security and enterprise boundaries.

administration reports

This is a set of documents you can view in Central Administration that reports on the health and functioning of different aspects of search.

audience

This is a collection of users defined by their membership in a group such as a distribution list and used to target information to specific groups based on their profile information.

authoritative web pages

In search, you can configure web pages as authoritative indicating they contain the most relevant information.

business intelligence

Generally refers to the various applications, practices, and technologies used to support business decision making.

claims-based authentication

This is a method that uses attributes possessed by an individual, such as group membership and age, to make “claims” about the person that, when verified, grant the party access to resources and that personalize the session.

cmdlets

These are built-in Windows PowerShell commands using different PowerShell-specific namespaces and processing commands as verb-noun pairs.

content deployment

This is the process of moving content from one site collection to another, usually across two or more server farms.

crawl databases

These are used by a specific search service application to store information about the location of content sources as well as crawl schedules and other crawl operation–related data.

crawl rules

These are rules you can apply to crawls that include or exclude specific paths in a URL from being crawled as well as specifying authentication accounts.

crawler impact rules

These are rules you can apply to crawls that minimize the impact of crawls on server resources.

diagnostic logging

This is composed of a series of logs that collect data typically used in troubleshooting errors in SharePoint.

differential backup

This is the type of backup that backs up only the portions of the platform or component that have changed since the previous backup operation.

document converters

These tools let users migrate documents from one format to another, either through a UI or through an automated process such as a custom workflow.

enterprise wiki

In SharePoint, this is a site or site collection that allows collaboration and coauthoring of content in a single location and allows for the discussion and management of such data relative to team and group-level projects.

federated locations

This is a method of allowing SharePoint search to crawl external content sources such as Google news.

folksonomy

A system of classification related to the practice and method of collaboratively creating and managing tags to categorize content.

forms-based authentication

This method presents the party wanting to authenticate with an editable form that credential data is entered into and processed, allowing the party access to resources.

full backup

This is the process of backing up the entire platform or component such as the farm or a web application, regardless of whether anything has changed in the platform or component since the previous backup.

health and usage data collection

This is a set of monitoring tools that gather together different types of data including event log data, performance counter data, and timer service metrics data.

index partition

These are groups of query components that are used to contain a subset of the full-text index that returns search results.

InfoPath Forms Services

This service provides the ability to deploy an organization’s forms in the SharePoint environment, allowing users to fill out any and all required forms within a web browser.

Kerberos

This authentication protocol allows nodes communicating over a nonsecure network to establish their identity in a secure manner, based on the client-server authentication model. In SharePoint, nodes must have access to an Active Directory domain.

lock

This is also known as a site collection lock. The lock prevents SharePoint users from accessing a site collection that is near or has reached its the data storage limit set by the quota template.

metadata

This term refers to “data about data” and describes the characteristics of the information as used to catalog said information.

metadata property mappings

This process is used to map properties taken from crawled documents and managed properties that users employ in search queries.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services (SSRS)

This is a complete, server-based platform designed to provide a wide variety of report types, allowing organizations to gather relevant data and apply it across the enterprise.

monitoring

In general, this is a collection of tools that lets you view the actions of various features and activities in SharePoint in order to establish a baseline of systems operations, determine when problems occur, and note trends that may require changes in the SharePoint hardware, deployment, and configuration settings.

multi-tenancy

This refers to the ability to partition data of shared services or software in order to meet the needs of multiple tenants, as opposed to setting up separate hardware platforms or running multiple instances of the service.

object caching

This allows the return of query information to be set by user permissions so that, in response to queries, users can view published information or published information plus draft documents depending on their permissions.

output caching

This allows web pages to be cached based on user profiles so the amount of a cache and how long web data is cached varies depending on the user account. Output caching can be configured at the site collection and web application level.

PerformancePoint Services

Formerly a separate product called PerformancePoint Server 2007, this service is not fully integrated into SharePoint Server 2010 and provides interactive dashboards and display key performance indicators (KPIs) to aid in business intelligence decisions.

profile synchronization

The process of linking, exchanging, and matching data between the SharePoint profile store and other profile stores, such as those in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS).

property databases

These contain the metadata associated with crawled content and can be added to or removed from SQL Server database servers.

quota template

This contains the storage limit values that determine how much data can be stored in a site collection.

Report Viewer web part

A specific web part for SharePoint installed when the SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services (SRSS) Add-in is installed; it can read report definition (.rdl) files generated by SRSS.

sandbox solution

This environment is used to restrict access to local and network resources to test load balancing or to test hosted environments prior to deployment.

scopes

These are used with scope rules to limit search queries to specific content and property types in order to return more accurate search results.

search service application

The specific service application in SharePoint responsible for providing search functionality.

Secure Store Service

This services replaces the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 single sign-on feature and is a shared service that provides storage and mapping of credentials to allow connections to external systems.

Security Token Service (STS)

This is a specialized web service used to respond to requests for security tokens and to provide identity management.

service application connections

This is used to associate service applications with web applications.

service applications

Services that are deployed in SharePoint and provide resources that can be shared across sites in a farm or between multiple farms.

service principal name (SPN)

This is a name that uniquely identifies an instance of a service among multiple services running on a computer. An SPN consists of the service name, the computer host name, and the port number.

SharePoint Health Analyzer

This utility runs a set of predefined health rules against servers in the SharePoint farm to monitor any potential configuration and performance issues.

shell

This is an interface between the computer user and the operating system kernel.

social features

These are components that authenticated SharePoint users can access and utilize in their My Site websites, such as ratings, social tags, and Note Board.

term store

This is a container for terms, which are words or phrases that are associated with a particular item in SharePoint.

unattended service account

This is a shared domain account that is used for accessing PerformancePoint Services data sources.

User Profile service

This is a shared service in SharePoint that lets you create and manage SharePoint user profiles that can then be accessed from sites and site collections.

User Profile service application

A central location in Central Administration from which you can manage personalization settings such as audiences, My Site settings, and profile synchronization.

Visio Graphics Service

This is a service application that allows users to share and view Visio diagrams directly in SharePoint provides data connections between diagrams in the Visio application and those published in SharePoint.

web analytics reports

This is a set of documents you can review in Central Administration that provides information about how the amount and type of search requests for different pages and sites in SharePoint.

web.config

This is a configuration file accessed with the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager that, when edited, allows the administrator to configure BLOB and object cache settings.

Windows PowerShell

This is a command-line interface that processes objects based on the .NET Framework.

workflow

This is a process that allows multiple people to collaborate and have input on documents for the purpose of managing project tasks.
