BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST

The Oracle initialization parameter that specifies the directory where the alert log and background process trace files are written.

backup sets

A set of RMAN (Recovery Manager) files that contain the saved data from a backup.

back up to trace

A method of backing up the control file contents to a text file in the location specified by the initialization parameter USER_DUMP_DEST.

baseline metrics

A collection of performance statistics against which current or future database performance is measured to determine if a significant performance deviation has occurred.

bigfile tablespace

A tablespace built on a single data file that can be up to 232 data blocks in size.

block change tracking file

A file created in the same location as the datafiles that tracks the blocks changed since the last incremental backup, saving time during an incremental backup because not all blocks in every datafile need to be checked for changes.
