We live in two worlds that do not usually meet. The first is the defense and security world made up of police officers, soldiers, analysts, and diplomats, the most capable of whom anonymously strive to secure our communities. Over the course of our careers, they have posed to us thousands of questions and challenges, which motivated us to write this book. They are too many to list and we wish to protect their anonymity, but the most prominent are John Sims and Donald Codling. Also, we thank Steve Anson for giving us the opportunity that directly led to this book's publication.

The second is the new media technology world made up of hundreds of entrepreneurs, technology companies, non-governmental organizations, thinkers, and geeks, many of whom we mention throughout the book. They are the ones who invent the technologies and deploy them innovatively. This book primarily catalogs their exploits, tweaks them, and introduces them to a different audience. We would list their names in detail but the list would be quite long and understandably some of them are hesitant to be associated with the security world for various reasons.

Of course, we would not be able to connect the two worlds if it were not for yet another world that has supported and sustained us throughout this process. We thank everyone at Wiley, especially, Carol Long and Edward Connor, for patiently guiding us through our first book. We also thank the Georgetown University Security Studies Program staff and faculty for fostering a community comprising a unique blend of people and subject matter that led us to collaborate and think creatively about security issues. Lastly, writing this book quickly was quite an endeavor for us and it generated its fair share of anxiety and sleepless nights. We thank our friends for making sure the book did not consume our lives completely by distracting us with parties, trips, and stupid but fun ideas.
