Acknowledgments

David Creelman worked closely with us on the final development of the manuscript. His analytical and writing skills were an enormous help to us, and his humorous prods at academia helped us stay practical. He asked the right questions and made our ideas sharper and more user friendly. Thank you, David.

We are also very grateful to Jerry Porras for writing the Foreword to our book.

Writing this book was greatly facilitated by the help we received from the members of the Center for Effective Organizations at the Marshall School. Special thanks to Dan Canning, Arienne McCracken, and Anjelica Wright for their help in preparing the manuscript and supporting our data-gathering activities.

Chris would like to honor and acknowledge his colleagues, friends, and family. Terri Egan, Ann Feyerherm, Miriam Lacey, Scott Sherman, and Ken Murrell have encouraged me to think differently about strategic change, and the “long gray line” of MSOD students helped shape my perspectives. My kids, Sarah, Hannah, and Sam, have been generous with their love, support, and patience while I wrote and rewrote, and I can hardly imagine my life without Debbie.

Ed would like to acknowledge the many colleagues and friends who have shared their thoughts and insights about organizational change with him. The list starts with Chris Argyris, who was the first to interest me in change, and includes so many others I will not mention them, with two exceptions. Jay Galbraith and Sue Mohrman have worked with me for over two decades and have greatly influenced my thinking. Finally, thank you, Patty, for your love, understanding, and support—you make it all worthwhile.
