Chapter 13. Identifiers and links

Identifiers offer a way to target a single instance of an element, or group of related elements, for direct formatting in a distinctive fashion. They are useful when the choice of style depends on more than the element name, or even the context within which the element appears. When items are uniquely identified, it is also possible to create links to them, which a user may follow. This chapter describes two mechanisms for identifying elements in a more specific way, using identifiers, and then shows how to build hypertext links to uniquely identified items.
