Inside the 802.11g Standard

Although 802.11a is faster than 802.11b, there are several shortcomings that affect the quality of data transmission. Because of the higher frequency, the transmission length is shortened and the signal is often unreliable, which has affected the growth of the 802.11a market.

However, another rendition of the 802.11 standard is under review, and is expected to affect the wireless community. Not only will 802.11g be more secure, but it will also operate in the 2.4GHz range and will provide speeds between 24Mbps and 54Mbps using OFDM. Although there has been no definitive release date, it is expected that the IEEE will adopt this standard.
