In virtually all open source projects, especially within the content management system (CMS) space, add-on modules are available that developers and editors alike can install to enrich the functionality of the system. You've probably seen them referred to as apps, modules, add-ons, plugins, extensions, and so on. In Umbraco, these extensions are officially referred to as packages. As of the writing of this book, a new version of Umbraco is in Beta, referred to as Juno. This upcoming version will also support skins, or themes, which will provide even greater flexibility and ease in deploying new websites using Umbraco.
Through this chapter you will learn how to install and use existing packages and also how to create your very own Umbraco package.
