Working with Picture Tools

Because pictures have attributes such as brightness and contrast, they have their own special set of tools you can use to make adjustments to the images. By using these tools you can make pictures that are too dark appear brighter and pictures that are hard to see crisper by adjusting the contrast between darks and lights. You can also recolor pictures to apply a wash of light or dark color to them.

Adjust Brightness or Contrast

  1. Click a picture to select it.

  2. Click the Picture Tools, Format tab.

    Adjust Brightness or Contrast
  3. Click the Brightness or Contrast button.

  4. Select a percentage from the list that appears. A plus number raises the brightness level or contrast, and a negative number reduces each. The effects are previewed on the picture as you move your mouse over the options.

If you want to work with both brightness and contrast settings at once, you can click Picture Corrections Options at the bottom of either the Brightness or Contrast list. This displays the Format Shape dialog box, with the Picture settings displayed. Your changes will still be previewed on the image for you as you make settings in this dialog box.

You can click the Set Transparent Color on the Recolor button menu. This causes the portion of the image that you drag over with your mouse to seem to disappear, revealing any objects underneath.

Caution

Caution

Be careful how you recolor pictures. Although coloring a picture may add some interest, it may also make the picture difficult to see in certain settings. Consider instead applying a colored border or slide background to add visual interest to a picture.
