Research Background: The Lessons of Experience

CCL’s research into the lessons that executives learn from experience has spanned a number of years, countries, and organizational types (see Figure 4 below), and it has generated many practical results. The suite of studies, for example, resulted in a training program specifically designed for human-resources managers (Assessment Certification Workshop) and classroom exercises for several other leader development programs. Two other assessments came out of the research: Benchmarks and Job Challenge Profile.

The research also launched several books and many articles. Most recently, Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders Today: Insights from Corporate India (2010) and a white paper, Grooming Top Leaders: Cultural Perspectives from China, India, Singapore, and the United States (2011). Researchers from around the world continue to adapt and use the methodology from the research on the lessons of experience and release their own academic and popular articles and presentations.
