GERMAINE KRULL

The World Traveler

1897 TO 1985

From the time she was born, Germaine Krull was a traveler. Born in East Prussia, she and her family moved to Bosnia, Paris, Slovenia, and rural Germany, before settling in Munich. As an adult, she became politically active, which at the time was very dangerous and even caused her to be arrested more than once! In the 1920s she settled in Paris where she photographed fashion models, everyday street scenes, and even fellow artists. She published one of the first books solely made up of photographs, called Métal. It was a collection of images of iron objects like bridges, cranes, and the Eiffel Tower, and it is considered by many to be one of the most important photo books in history. She traveled and took photos all over the world, including Brazil, Republic of the Congo, Southeast Asia (where she managed a hotel), and India (where she lived with Tibetan monks!).
