Special Occasions: Step-by-Step Projects

Formal (or Not-so-Formal) Wear

We’ve established that fashion is an integral part of our daily lives and that there is an outfit for each and every activity. But the most iconic outfits start in the world of haute couture: custom, high-end, one-of-a-kind fashions created by famous designers. From the ostentatious fashions worn by Lady Gaga to the classic gowns gracing Oprah Winfrey, designing for special occasions is where the glamour begins! Borrow one or more ideas from these fashion-forward designs to create your own unique line of formal wear!

Red Carpet Glam

Image

1

Start with a stick figure.

Image

2

Fill out the form, indicating the neck, arms, legs, and torso. Add a centerline to the face and a horizontal eyeline.

Image

3

Sketch in the elemental design features of the gown. Think about neckline, skirt shape, fullness, and angles while you draw. Sketch a hairstyle that complements the style of the dress.

Image

4

Erase the structural lines from your initial sketch and finish the details.

Image

This gown is asymmetrical, bold, and unfussy—a fashion that projects confidence! A strong black outline emphasizes the shape of the gown, while scribbly strokes of color indicate texture and shine. Streaky fills of lighter color create highlights and give the illustration a studio sketch vibe.

Classic Ball Gown

Image

1

Start with a stick figure in a classic pose.

Image

2

Add outlines to begin building out the pose.

Image

3

Sketch your design! Draw this two-piece gown with extra pouf in the skirt. Keep the shapes simple so that the ombré color will be the star of the show. Add an elegant hairstyle that will suit the look.

Image

4

Erase unnecessary lines and sketch marks to reveal a clean design.

Image

5

Add the details. Draw strappy floral heels for a lovely peek-a-boo under the hi-low hemline.

Image

Transfer the line drawing to watercolor paper. Use a soft gradation of watercolor in pretty shades of blue to create the ombré effect. Add simple gold shoes, earrings, and a matching belt for a bit of glam. The dark navy skirt lining adds a perfect contrast to the lavender flowers on the shoes.

Floral Tux

Image

1

Start with a stick figure in a simple pose. Use an oval for the head; then stack horizontal lines for the shoulders, chest, waist, and hips.

Image

2

Add weight to the figure by outlining the structure. Add a midline and eyeline to the face.

Image

3

Draw the basic structure of the tux.

Image

4

Erase the structural lines.

Image

5

Aside from the pocket hanky, the details of this tux are all about the floral pattern! Draw some rough florals on the suit to get the placement balanced.

Image

This fun tuxedo gets its personality from the funky floral pattern and the color-coordinated sneakers. Apply watercolor in the shades you desire to bring this design to life!

Flirty & Fun Prom Queen

Image

1

Draw a stick figure in a pose that suits your design. This one is a bit trickier because it shows the figure from the back looking over one shoulder. The ribbon shoulder detail with a bow tied in the back at the waist made this pose most desirable. Always consider the strongest design features of your garments, and then create the poses that best showcase these details.

Image

2

Add volume to the form, as well as a midline, eyeline, and hairstyle.

Image

3

Sketch the design! This fancy party dress is colorful and unique with its over-the-shoulder ribbon bow. Wedge sneakers add a playful touch to this already whimsical look.

Image

4

Erase unnecessary sketch marks, and then add accessories, such as a chunky beaded bracelet, ruffled socks, and prom queen-worthy tiara!

Image

This final illustration was colored digitally to capture bright, saturated color and white-on-color sparkles, but you can capture this look just as effectively using markers and ink.

Traditional Tux

Image

1

Draw a simplified figure in a suitable pose for your design.

Image

2

Add form to the figure and a hairstyle.

Image

3

Sketch your design! Pay attention to proportion and structure.

Image

4

Erase old sketch lines, and add any details that you like!

Image

This chic, confident style deserves a drawing technique with flair. A brush pen drawing adds great line quality and texture. Add bold, contrasting blacks digitally or with heavy marker for extra punch. The pink hair is just for fun!
