About the Reviewers

David Axmark has been working as a Software Consultant for over 15 years. Among the many projects he has worked on are a state-of-the-art market research system (CommonLISP+CLOS+MySQLs-ISAM), advanced business graphics (in 32k RAM), and a system to write working orders for a power company. He has written many lines of code in 6502 and Z80 assembler, BASIC, C, CommonLisp, (Bourne)-Shell, and Perl. His involvement with MySQL started some years before the first public release. David lives in Uppsala, Sweden with his plants and computers.

Vijay Chaugule is working as Senior Systems Administrator for a Bay Area company handling a large UNIX network. He has eight years of experience in systems and network management and has worked on a lot of commercial and GNU tools. He loves to write Perl scripts and to compile and install GNU software. He is currently using MySQL on a project for induscrafts.com.

Chad Cunningham is a Systems Developerfor the Ohio State University Department of Mathematics, where he focuses on developing Web-based learning tools to augment traditional classroom instruction.

Bill Gerrard is the Vice-President of Technology at Daze Networks, Inc. in Huntington Beach, California. Daze Networks operates Internet services, including DigitalDaze.com virtual Web servers that give you complete control over your own MySQL database server and DNSCentral.com, which offers domain name registration, parking, Web forwarding, and email forwarding using MySQL as the back-end database.

Jijo George John is a Technical Lead in the software development division of the Chemical Analysis group of Hewlett Packard Company. He is experienced in developing system and application software for chemical instruments. He has worked on software close to the instruments/devices as well as large database applications. He is currently using MySQL on a project for induscrafts.com.

Fred Read has been running his own consultancy, ServaLan Systems Limited, for the past 14 years. ServaLan Systems specializes in producing Unix systems in the areas of Telecoms, databases, finance, and the Internet. He is currently working on a Telecoms switching system. For the last three years, he has also been running an Internet Service Provider (PremierISP) and a Web advertising business (PremierAds). He has been married to Helen for the past nine years. They have three children (two girls and a boy) and live in England.

Dr. Egon Schmid is with Six Offene Systeme GmbH in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany, where he is part of the development team that develops sophisticated Web-based database solutions. He is also a member of the PHP Documentation Group. He co-authored the first PHP book in German.

Jani Tolonen is a Software Developer of MySQL. He is a 23-year-old student at Helsinki University of Technology, where he focuses on computer technology and software programming in many areas. Jani has been under the training of Michael "Monty" Widenius, the creator of MySQL, and is dedicated to its further development. Jani and Monty became very good friends incidentally: They were neighbors over ten years ago. Jani's work with MySQL began shortly after Monty started developing MySQL in 1995.

Michael "Monty" Widenius is a Swedish-speaking Finn who has been working with databases since 1978. He has been employed by and been part owner of TcX since 1981 and has written the whole part of UNIREG (the predecessor to MySQL) and most of the MySQL server. He studied physics at the Helsinki University of Technology, but when it comes to programming, he is mostly self taught. He has mainly been working in Basic, Assembler, C, LISP, Perl, SQL, C++ (in this order), but he is always willing to look at some new languages when he gets some time. He is married and has two children (a boy and a girl—Max and My), two turtles, one dog, and two snakes. Nowadays, most of his time goes into answering mails.
