Introduction
Pattern and Palette Sourcebook 2 is a comprehensive guide to thoughtful color coordi-
nation and sophisticated pattern styles. Use this book as an inspiring tool to provide you
with unconventional insights into the nature and application of color combination and
pattern design. Color preferences are very subjective personal choices, so explore the
Technicolor pages of this guide with curiosity and an open mind. Color does not exist
without a reference, so the designer, Heidi Arrizabalaga, has used patterns to uncover
combinations that encourage you to examine color relationships in the context of design.
The philosophy of this manual is based on interpretation—in this case, the interpretation
of the designer. Heidi has created six different color and pattern combinations that are
arranged under the chapter titles Modern Enthusiast, Madame Nouveau, Floral Aesthete,
Global Maven, Pop Impresario, and Urban Vivant. With these artfully designed palettes,
she has created a framework for trends in color and patterns.
Each page showcases five examples of patterns that were developed using two or more
of the color samples at the top of the page. By studying and experimenting with these
patterns, you can see how any two or more colors work together to create astonishingly
different effects. The same coordinated set of colors can say vastly different things,
depending on how they are assembled and applied. Use this application as a casebook
to help you create interesting color schemes more quickly, accurately, and creatively.
