How it works...

For every account in Linux, the user account details are stored in the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files. These details specify how the user account will act. When we are able to change the details for any user account in these files, we are able to change the behavior of the user account.

In the preceding section, we have seen how to modify these files to "lock" or "unlock" the user account.
