Acknowledgments

I have had the opportunity to know many wonderful leaders in my career; I draw on those relationships for this book. Bruce Avolio originally taught me to look at the relationships of leaders and their groups. He models the work he teaches and transforms the way I work with leaders. Sue Wheelan deserves thanks for her flexibility and encouragement as she deepened my understanding of groups. My professional colleagues, including Val Aguirre, Lauren Ashwell, Hope Greenfield, Mary Key, Katherine Kish, Pamela Rivera, Mary Ryan, Robb Most, Dick Quinn, and Randy Williams, as well as all the folks at the International Gestalt Center, but especially Sonia and Edwin Nevis, have influenced me. Curt Carlson encouraged me to finish my PhD many years ago and continues to support my work. Mary Lou Leib, Marianne Roy, Suzanne La Bombard, and Maureen Pryor showed me what it is like to be part of a stage four team. Jack Welch is well known as an excellent leader, but I want to acknowledge his contribution to my work, even in granting permission of his note in this book—he always is supportive and positive—which is a sign of a true leader!

Finally, to friends and family who listened while I “talked out” the ideas for this book—Anita Attridge, Karen Copeland, Rob Gilbert, and of course my entire family—thanks for your support.

Christina Parisi, the editor of this book, provided guidance and constant support. Thanks for supporting me through a fulfilling process.
