Preface

Bill Smith taught Stage Makeup at California State University, Long Beach, when I was an undergraduate student there. We heard a lot about Richard Corson and used his book in class. When I got my M.F.A. at California State University, Fullerton, I worked alongside Abel Zeballos. These three talented artists/educators gave me an incredibly rich foundation for a career in performing arts.

Richard Corson set the standard for all makeup texts. James Glavan added his invaluable update. What I sought to revise was the information, and visuals, that could be updated. This revision was done with much respect, and reverence, for those who came before.

Thank you to Jeanne Zalesky, the talented, enthusiastic editor who was my guide. Susan Hallman, Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at California State University, Fullerton, who welcomed me back to work on this project—many thanks. I must include appreciation for all of the talented students, faculty, and staff who helped out while I was there. It was a privilege to work with Abel Zeballos once again.

Dana Nye, Patricia Saito-Lewe, and the Ben Nye staff gave a lot of time and high quality work. (Thank you Dana for all of the enthusiasm!) Much gratitude to Paul Thompson at the Designory; Claudia Longo at Kryolan; Sheila McKenna at Kett Cosmetics; Christien Tinsley, creator of Tinsley Transfers; Ava Scanlan at Temptu; and Matthew Mungle at W.M. Creations, for their generosity. A large amount of appreciation goes out to the accommodating team at M.A.C. cosmetics: Monique Boyer, Erin McCaffrey, Javier Cobo, and the knowledgeable Mr. Gordon Espinet.

Barbara J. Bandy started this process out with the first photo session and her talent and time are very much appreciated. Makeup artist Paul Hadobas gave freely of his time and wisdom. This book re-connected me to some of the people from my union days: Rick Geyer at Ben Nye and Randy Sayer at Local 706. Erin Hennessy and MK Steeves (wigmasters) spent many hours working on the hair and wig updates. Thank you to everyone along the way and, most of all, thank you Mr. Corson for the decades of inspiration.
