Virtual worlds are only the latest step in the democratization of learning. They provide learning organizations the powerful, unique ability to engage and empower employees in ways that accommodate their digital and mobile lifestyles. Virtual worlds have the power to transform the way we learn.

Refers to the second generation of web design; it is characterized by facilitating creativity and collaboration. Examples include wikis, podcasts, virtual worlds, and social-networking sites.

For virtual worlds to truly be an effective source of learning, they can’t be looked at as just another outlet to disseminate the same type of training. Trainers must rethink the way they devise and deliver learning to fully take advantage of all virtual worlds have to offer. Virtual worlds are an exciting new outlet to deliver learning, but the technology will interest learners for only so long. In the end it will still be up to the trainers to design unique and engaging content.
