This book has presented a fable about Virtual Vic, who learned lessons from his informal board of directors (BOD), Reliable Reggie, Solitary Samantha, and Being Bob. This book did not get into a lot of theory and research related to either the virtual work environment (VWE) or the three human perceptions of trust, isolation, and presence. There are many books that can get into great detail on these topics. My book The Human Side of Virtual Work: Managing Trust, Isolation, and Presence goes into greater detail on these topics. It was by design that created in a story format the aspects that affect all individuals associated with the VWE as I believe it is through this story that the challenges associated with the VWE can best be understood and reflected upon.

I encourage anyone working in the VWE to dig deeper into any of the situations that they related to in Vic’s story. I am hopeful that over time the concepts discussed will become nonexistent in the VWE and this new structure does indeed make all departments productive units and keep alive the human touch.
