Vertical scaling occurs when an existing IT resource is replaced by another of a higher or lower capacity. Replacing an IT resource with another one that has a higher capacity is referred to as scaling up and replacing an IT resource with a lower capacity resource is referred to as scaling down. Vertical scaling is less common in Cloud environments due to the replacement downtime caused.
