About the author

Frances Trought is Head of Student Talent Development at Pearson Business School. She has a career in higher education that spans 14 years and has observed that increasingly the degree is just one piece of the puzzle to success upon graduation. Employability is a key issue that affects the success of all students. The graduate market is becoming more and more competitive, and students need to understand the employability skills valued by graduate recruiters. Employers are unable to differentiate students based purely on their academics, with 72% scoring a first or 2:1. As a result, extracurricular activities and work experience have risen in importance. Frances is a keen advocate of volunteering and continually promotes opportunities to students, as it is a great opportunity to gain skills and contribute to society. To this end, she has developed the Contribute Volunteering Award at Pearson Business School. Frances is passionate that students step out of their comfort zone at university to develop skills transferable to the work place. As a result, she develops workshops, delivers talks, provides one-to-one coaching and partners with organisations to bridge the gap between business and university.
