Mobile Devices

The internet and World Wide Web are no longer limited to access from personal computers. The continuing expansion of smartphones and tablet computers and their capabilities requires that websites and other internet content be compatible with these devices. A website designed specifically for mobile devices is likely to be coded using Extensible HyperText Markup Language—Mobile Profile (XHTML-MP), which is defined in the Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) 2.0 that is published by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). This standard also defines WAP CSS.

The XHTML-MP is similar to the HTML and XHTML standards, which allows similar testing to that described earlier in the chapter. However, some tests are specific to websites and mobile devices:

• Compatibility with various smartphone and tablet operating systems, such as iOS, Android, and Windows

• Loading time

• Object sizes, such as buttons, text boxes, etc.

• Image sizes

• Use of bulleted lists and short text

• Dial-out functions which are compatible with a phone

Many of the same testing tools available for testing HTML and CSS will also perform similar tests on XHTML-MP sites as well.
