The forwarding model comprises two operations:

• Configure: Here the parser is programmed and the order of the match action stages are set; also, the header fields to be processed at each stage are defined. The protocols that are supported are determined here and so is the method of packet processing.
• Populate: This operation adds and removes entries in the match action tables that were defined earlier. It determines the policy applied to packets at any given time.
