Kismet is a tool used when stealth is of importance in an attack, since it works passively. The tool doesn't send any loggable packets, which reduces the potential for detection. It, however, can detect hidden wireless access points and clients, and then associate them with each other. Its main features are that it does sniffing on WiFi networks, can give XML output, can be operated remotely, and is able to capture traffic from multiple sources. Kismet can be used to spy on users since it can scan for all available wireless network channels in a certain area. Kismet is able to determine the activity of devices connected to a wireless network. Therefore, it can know when a laptop is streaming videos or when a gaming console is being used, as long as they are connected to a WiFi network that it can analyze. A hacker with Kismet can discover all electronic devices in a user's home that are connected to the WiFi network.
