Acknowledgments

As are most, this book was born out of the joint efforts of many. We would like to thank all of the influencers of Managing Employee Turnover in its current form. We offer the following list of names with a bit of apprehension knowing that some will inevitably be overlooked.

We thank the SHRM Foundation for supporting and encouraging our initial efforts to present turnover research in a user-friendly format.

We thank James Vardaman for coauthoring with us on the Academy of Management Perspectives (AMP) article that was the genesis of this book project. The 2010 AMP article, “Retaining Talent: Replacing Misconceptions with Evidence-Based Strategies,” won two prestigious awards; thanks to James’ drive for excellence and to the editorial guidance of Garry Bruton and Timothy Devinney who recognized the potential of the article and pushed us to achieve it.

We thank David Parker and the good people at Business Expert Press for believing that a couple of academics could produce an end product that’s useful and interesting in both boardrooms and classrooms.

We thank those who reviewed and commented on early copies of the manuscript, including Ben Bryant, Jack Goldfrank, Gary Johnson, Jay Myers, Karl Schledwitz, and James Vardaman.

Denise Rousseau deserves a round of applause for giving her vote of confidence in our book by writing the foreword. Thanks also to Denise for blazing a path of evidence-based management literature that makes scientific management knowledge truly accessible to those managers who live it out daily.

Finally, we thank Heather and Dorothy for their patience and support as we worked on this project, sometimes at the expense of important projects at home.

David would also like to thank Rodger Griffeth for kick-starting his scholarly career and mentoring him over the years.
