Part 5: Supporting your unified content strategy

18 Changing roles

19 The role of XML

20 The role of content management

No strategy can be implemented without a full and complete complement of people to carry it out. In Chapter 18, “Changing roles,” we explore what collaborative authoring means for the people who produce the content. We also examine what types of roles—existing roles and new roles you might not know you need—should be integrated into the organization to effectively support the unified content strategy.

And along with the right roles to support your strategy, you also need the right technology. XML is the underlying technology that makes modern content management systems (CMSs) possible. The best part about XML? It’s like driving a car—just like you don’t have to know how an internal combustion engine works in your car, you don’t have to know how XML works to be able to use it. But we do encourage you to read about it in Chapter 19, “The role of XML,” because it will give you a solid foundation for understanding how the use of XML affects your unified content strategy.

In Chapter 20, “The role of content management,” we discuss how you integrate content management into your environment, the types of authoring tools you can use, the workflow systems you can set up, and the delivery mechanisms you can choose. Each aspect of content management affects your organization and requires careful planning and implementation to ensure that the full potential of content management can be realized.
