Translate Conversations

The new Translate app in iOS 14 (not iPadOS 14) can translate between a number of different languages. You can speak into the app in one language and have the app speak your words in the language you choose.

Use Conversation Mode

You can use Translate to speak what you want to say, and have it speak it out of the iPhone in the language you choose. Here’s how:

  1. At the top of the screen, choose the languages you want to translate between. The input language is on the left, the output language is on the right (Figure 59).

  2. Tap the microphone button.

  3. Speak the phrase you want to translate. When you’re finished, simply stop speaking.

  4. Tap the play button to play the phrase in the chosen output language (Figure 60).

Translate Text

You can also type in the text you want to translate:

  1. At the top of the screen, choose the languages you want to translate between. The input language is on the left, the output language is on the right.

  2. Tap Enter Text.

  3. Enter the text and tap Go.

You can also tap the tabs at the bottom of the view to swap which language you’re typing (Figure 61).

Define a Word

Once your text is translated, you can tap the dictionary icon and then any word, in either the input or output language, to easily see word definitions (Figure 62). Once you’re finished looking at definitions, tap the X icon to dismiss the dictionary.

View Recents and Make Favorites

If you tap Favorites at the bottom of the screen, you can see your most recent translations. Swipe any entry from right to left to reveal Favorite and Delete options. Tapping Delete removes an entry from your history, while tapping Favorite pins that translation to the top of that screen (Figure 63).

Another way to add a translation as a favorite is to tap the star icon, next to the dictionary icon.

Download Languages for Offline Translation

By default, Translate connects to the internet for translation data, but you can download individual languages for offline translation, better performance, and improved privacy.

To download languages for offline use:

  1. On the Translate screen, tap either the input or output language at the top of the screen.

  2. Scroll down to Available Offline Languages.

  3. Tap the download icon on the language you want to use offline.

It can take some time for the language to download. To delete a language, return to that screen and swipe the language from right to left and tap Delete.
