Best Practices

The following are best practices from this chapter:

  • When choosing a client configuration for Exchange, an organization should evaluate the different solutions available for non-Windows client connectivity.

  • Outlook 2001 for the Macintosh will run on OS9 as well as OS X; however, on OS X, the Outlook client runs in OS9 emulation mode, so OS X users might consider using Entourage X or the Remote Desktop Connection client for access.

  • To achieve the full Outlook functionality of Windows users, a non-Windows client might consider using a Terminal Services session, which provides full support for the full Windows client that is identical to the one Windows users access.

  • Users who want calendar integration access tend not to want to use Outlook Express, which lacks calendar support, and should consider one of the other client applications that support calendaring.

  • For POP3 to work, the function should be enabled on the Exchange server. However, if POP3 will not be used, the service should be disabled on Exchange to minimize any security risk caused by an unused service.

  • To improve security, leave the password entry on the Outlook Express configuration page blank so that the user will be prompted for a password every time.

  • Because different versions of the client software for the Macintosh have different support for various versions of the Mac OS, make sure to check compatibility before installing the client software.

  • To enhance logon security, NTLM v2 should be enabled for Entourage clients to access an Exchange server.
