ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Ian H. Witten is professor of computer science at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. He directs the New Zealand Digital Library research project. His research interests include information retrieval, machine learning, text compression, and programming by demonstration. He received an MA in mathematics from Cambridge University in England, an MSc in computer science from the University of Calgary in Canada, and a PhD in electrical engineering from Essex University in England. Witten is a fellow of the ACM and of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He has published widely on digital libraries, machine learning, text compression, hypertext, speech synthesis and signal processing, and computer typography. He has written several books, the latest being How to Build a Digital Library (2002) and Data Mining, Second Edition (2005), both published by Morgan Kaufmann.

Marco Gori is professor of computer science at the University of Siena, where he is the leader of the artificial intelligence research group. His research interests are machine learning with applications to pattern recognition, web mining, and game playing. He received a Laurea from the University of Florence and a PhD from the University of Bologna. He is the chairman of the Italian Chapter of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, a fellow of the IEEE and of the ECCAI, and a former president of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence.

Teresa Numerico teaches network theory and communication studies at the University of Rome. She is also a researcher in the philosophy of science at the University of Salerno (Italy). She earned her PhD in the history of science and was a visiting researcher at London South Bank University in the United Kingdom in 2004, having been awarded a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship. She was formerly employed as a business development and marketing manager for several media companies, including the Italian branch of Turner Broadcasting System (CNN and Cartoon Network).
