This part of the book looks at the basic skills of coaching for managers and offers ideas for how you might develop those further. We will focus on just the core skills, as these will help you the most as you coach in your workplace. The core skills of management coaching are:

There are obviously other skills that are useful, such as the ability to observe non-verbal communication, but it’s best to begin with the basics, and lay a firm foundation on which you can build. Please remember that you already have some ability in all five skills – maybe you’re already an effective listener, or maybe you promote warmth and trust easily. My aim is to help you develop in these areas further, for example by understanding why sometimes you don’t listen as well as you might.
