Part II

EXPLORE – Identify alternatives and criteria

Recall that you need four components to solve your problem:

  • The overarching question that summarises your problem – the quest,
  • Various alternatives to answer that question,
  • Criteria that will help you identify which of these alternatives you prefer, and
  • The evaluations of each alternative on each criterion.

Now that we have a quest, let’s shift our focus to exploring alternatives and criteria.

Chapter 4 shows how you can explore the solution space using a close cousin of the why map: the how map. Chapter 5 will show how to explore criteria that you can use to choose the most promising alternative.

A loop diagram depicts FrED. The steps are: frame, what's my problem; explore, how may I solve my problem; decide, how should I solve my problem. The explore works as explore alternatives and explore criteria.
