Chapter 9. Printing Checks and Finding Transactions

"…when is the easiest time to get a firm grip on accounting? During the start-up stage! The start-up stage is perfect for learning accounting due to the minimal number of transactions occurring." from a website about accounting for entrepreneurs.

In every office there is always someone who is handy at finding, fixing, and organizing things. Fax machine toner needs to be replaced? Call Joe. Cannot find the five year old contract? Joe will know where to look. Copy machine jammed? Where is Joe?

What if a handy helper is free? Such as GnuCash. GnuCash can find things, fix things, and organize things. Of course, GnuCash can be handy only with your bookkeeping and accounting things, but then, at least you can be sure that one aspect of running your business is taken care of. That should be a big relief, considering that financial management and control is one of the most important aspects of running a business.

In this chapter we shall learn the following:

  • How to search and find a transaction or a set of transactions.
  • Printing checks.
  • Adding account codes to accounts.
  • How to check and fix transactions, if some of the splits are accidentally not imported or deleted.
  • How to use the financial calculator provided by GnuCash for calculating loan and mortgage payments.

So let's see how we can make use of the features of GnuCash to organize, find, and fix things.

Finding transactions

When you start entering transactions, things are easier to find. You have very few transactions covering a short period. However, if your business is transaction intensive, or you have data for a longer period, you may find yourself spending more time in searching for transactions. GnuCash provides a number of features to organize, winnow, and find the very specific transaction or set of transactions that you are looking for.
