STEP 4. BRAINSTORMING EXERCISE
Please brainstorm some steps you could have taken to improve the feedback interaction. The questions below are included to help you along.
Is your feedback recipient generally someone who needs more feedback than others, or less?
Does this person usually respond best to feedback given in writing? Verbally? In person? By voice-mail? By e-mail?
What time of the day is the person busiest? Least busy? What do you think is the best time to give this person feedback? Do this person’s tasks and responsibilities offer some natural opportunities for feedback?
What could you have done to clarify your goals when giving the feedback? What could you have done to ensure your message was understood?
Before giving the feedback, did you stop and weigh the positives and negatives? How could you have better balanced praise and criticism?
Before giving the feedback, could you have taken time to reflect, question your assumptions, check facts, rehearse?
Could you have scheduled a specific time for follow-up?

2. The FAST Evaluation: Manager Feedback
This evaluation is designed to help you gain some valuable perspective by assessing feedback you have received from a manager. It requires that you take the following steps:
1. Recall an instance when you received feedback from a senior manager you report to now or have reported to in the past.
2. Objectively assess that feedback by answering 12 evaluation questions.
3. Score the assessment to see how FAST your manager’s feedback was.
Consider using the work space in the evaluation’s first section to record details of the feedback episode you have chosen for your focus. This may help you with your recollections during work on Step 2, the assessment of your manager’s feedback.
Please note that an additional copy of the evaluation can be found in Appendix B. |
