Creating visualizations manually

Once a user is familiar with the charts and their customization in Qlik Sense, they may prefer to create a chart manually. The following example shows how to create a chart manually, as well as how to apply some appearance customization:

We need to make room for the new chart. We do this by deleting one of the charts present on the sheet.
  1. Select the first bar chart in the following screenshot with the title 'EmployeesPostalCode' by 'sum(SalesAmount)':

To delete the chart, select it by right-clicking the mouse and selecting Delete from the menu. You can also use the Delete key on the keyboard, or click on the Trash button on the panel at the bottom of the screen.
  1. After deleting the chart, click on the Charts button in the asset panel and drag the Pie chart to the blank space on the sheet, as demonstrated in the following screenshot:

  1. Click on the Add dimension button and select CategoryName from the Fields list, as follows:

  1. Click on the Add measure button and select SalesAmount from the Fields list, as follows:

  1. When selecting a measure from a field, we need to select the Aggregation button for the field. In this example, we select Sum(SalesAmount):

  1. The chart will look like the following screenshot:

  1. To help us to select and explore the data shown in the visualization at any specific point of time, we can also add a filter panel to the sheet.
  2. Make some room at the top of the sheet by reducing the height of the charts and leaving a blank row.
  1. Drag the Filter panel item onto the area of free space to create the chart, as follows:

  1. After the chart is created, in the right panel, click on the Add dimension button, as follows:

  1. Add the following fields: OrderYear, OrderMonth, and OrderDate. These fields will be shown in the Dimensions Pane, as well as in the sheet, as follows:

  1. Click Done to enter view mode. Now, we can freely explore the visualization we've created so far, as follows:
