Chapter 17. Resolving Common Group Policy Problems

This chapter presents some common GPO application problems and suggests strategies for solving them. Fixing problems related to Group Policy objects (GPOs) is not a hard science. Rather, you have to use the knowledge you have gained throughout this book to logically interpret the situation at hand and determine the origin of the problem.

Problems with GPO deployment are typically related to problems with initial replication of the GPO settings, errant administration of the GPOs and GPO settings, incorrect delegation of administration for GPO management, IP configuration mistakes, or other administrative errors and misconfigurations. It is sometimes difficult to predetermine what the user or administrator will experience when a GPO setting or configuration is incorrectly set. Users might not be able to access resources, or an administrator might be unable to administer any GPOs. Tools are available for tracking down GPO problems, and this chapter discusses these tools where appropriate. Chapter 16 also covered some of these tools in detail, and here we put them to use working through some of the problems that can arise from a GPO implementation.
