About the Authors

Barbara Mitchell

Barbara Mitchell, managing partner of The Mitchell Group, is a human resources and organization development consultant. Barbara served in senior human resources leadership positions with Marriott International and Human Genome Sciences, and co-founded The Millennium Group International, LLC in 1998.

Barbara’s book The Essential Workplace Conflict Handbook, coauthored with Cornelia Gamlem, was published in September 2015 by Career Press. The Essential Human Resources Handbook, coauthored with Sharon Armstrong, was published in July 2008 by Career Press. She also contributed to On Staffing—Advice and Perspective from HR Leaders and Cover Letters for Dummies. She served on the Society of Human Resource Management’s Special Expert Panel on Consulting and Outsourcing in recognition of her expertise and long service to the HR profession.

Barbara is a past president of the Employment Management Association, which was a professional emphasis group of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). She is a past president of the Personnel and Industrial Relations Association (PIRA) of Los Angeles, the Leesburg/Greater Loudoun (VA) SHRM chapter, and WTPF, the Forum for HR Professionals.

Barbara is a graduate of North Park University (Chicago, Illinois) and has taken graduate-level classes at UCLA and the University of Denver. She is a frequent speaker on topics relating to recruitment, retention, generations at work, and many other topics, and has presented at many trade associations nationally. Barbara is a docent at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and a past board member of Habitat for Humanity Northern Virginia.

Cornelia Gamlem

Cornelia Gamlem, SPHR, is president and founder of the GEMS Group Ltd., a management consulting firm that helps a wide range of clients with issues related to HR initiatives, business effectiveness, and compliance. Prior to starting this practice, she worked for CSC, where she held senior HR positions and was responsible for managing policies, programs, and initiatives supporting best human resources and employment practices. Cornelia’s book The Essential Workplace Conflict Handbook, also co-authored with Barbara Mitchell, was published in September 2015. In addition, she is co-author of a book about affirmative action: Roadmap to Success: 5 Steps to Putting Action Into Your Affirmative Action Program. Cornelia has also authored white papers and articles for industry publications.

An active volunteer, Cornelia served on a number of task forces with national employers’ groups that influenced public policy and in several volunteer leadership positions for the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), including its National Board of Directors, its Global Forum Board of Directors, and its National Workplace Diversity Committee.

She has testified before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on three occasions and is often called upon for interviews. She has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Financial Times, Newsday, Boston Globe, and Fortune, and she frequently speaks to business groups. A graduate of Marymount University, where she received a master’s degree in human resource management, Cornelia is also certified as Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). She has taught HR courses at a number of colleges and universities in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
