Alvin Lustig (1915–1955). Although it is more than half a century since his death, Alvin Lustig’s influence can still be felt, and seen, in contemporary graphic design. Perhaps best known for his groundbreaking book jacket designs of the 1940s – with their use of expressive typography, simple line-art illustrations and photographic collages – Lustig also designed buildings, furniture, interiors, exhibitions, title sequences and, famously, a helicopter. A sense of honesty permeates Lustig’s graphic design work. His stripped-down compositions and direct approach was in line with modernist ideals of the time and, along with Paul Rand, Lusting helped bring these principles to American graphic design. Alvin Lustig also played an important role in design education, teaching in the USA at Black Mountain College, the University of Georgia and Yale University.

German designers Tim Faulwetter and Peter Werner share an interest in the dynamics of urban subcultures. It is this curiosity that has been the catalyst for their collaboration since they first met in 1998. After working together on different projects, they joined forces in 2001 and set up rebootlab.com. Since then, they have worked together on intercultural and intermediate design projects. The majority of their work focuses on developing design for interactive media, illustration and graphic design. Like the subcultures, rebootlab.com is constantly reinventing itself; it is both hideout and design laboratory at the same time.
