Monitoring in the Social Media Landscape

Monitoring is an integral part of your social media security practices. If you can’t monitor activity, you cannot control activity. Monitoring has to target three audiences: your customers, the public, and your employees. Threats and attacks are both internal and external, and so your monitoring activities have to manage both sides of the attack scenario.

In this chapter, we discuss what you need to monitor. We also explore different tools and processes you need to follow to determine where the threats are on the Internet and how people use social media platforms to compromise your company and brand. Finally, we look at the importance of creating a “what if” scenario to protect against leaks of confidential information and examine some of the relevant court rulings about privacy and monitoring.
