Remain Focused on the Solutions, Not the Barriers

AS THE LEADER, you cannot let members of your team get by with simply complaining about an issue that frustrates them. We have all been part of these gripe sessions. As the leader, you need people who will be solutions focused and willing to step up and solve the problems at hand. This is leadership in action. It is easy to take shots from the peanut gallery, but leaders identify solutions that work.

As soon as you and/or your team slip into this state, step back and reframe the situation. Challenge yourself and those around you to brainstorm ways around the problem. Those who work for you will have a difficult time leading others (within your department or within the organization) until they adopt a solutions-focused attitude. Create a culture where, if someone complains, they know that they will be expected to be part of the solution.

When confronted by employees with challenges or issues facing the organization, consistently respond with the following question: “What would you suggest?” This approach will force your team members to stop, think, and become a part of the solution. Of course, as with any strategy, this can certainly be overused and abused. There certainly are times when the leader must be directive, so be sure to use this method judiciously and in the right context.

What are some of these issues in your department or organization?
