Reflection is putting up a mirror to yourself and the people and events around you, and learning from what you see. Three kinds of reflection lead to group learning according to Killion and Hamson: (1) reflection-on-action (looking back on what happened); (2) reflection-in-action (examining the situation while you are in it); and (3) reflection-for-action (focusing on what was learned and how that learning can be used in the future). Questions that can guide each of these kinds of reflection in groups are listed on the following worksheet.
WORKSHEET FOR GROUP REFLECTION
Reflection-on-action:
How does the group feel about the situation?
What went well?
What did not go as well as we expected?
What options did we consider as we selected the behavior/action?
What option did we choose?
How did we know that what we chose to do would be best in this situation? What did we base that on (i.e., theory, experience, intuition)?
How did we know that another behavior/action would not be appropriate?
What made this situation unusual?
What might we have done differently?
