The following procedure will help you to define storage capabilities using vCenter tags:
- Connect to vCenter Server using the HTML5 client and go to Menu | Tags Custom Attributes:
We will create four tags—Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Local Storage—and then associate them with the datastores.
- On the Tags & Customer Attributes page, go to Categories and click on + to create a category:
- Use the Add Category window to create a Storage Tiers category, with Tags Per Object set to One tag, and allow associations with Datastores and Datastore Clusters:
- On the Tags & Customer Attributes page, go to Tags and click on + to create tags:
- In the Add Tag window, specify a Name, a Description, and a Category for the new tag. Each tag should be associated with a category. Hence, if there are no desired categories available to choose from, a new category should be created using steps 2 and 3:
- Use step 5 to create additional tags if necessary. In this case, we will be creating Gold Tier, Silver Tier, and Bronze Tier tags:
Now that we have created our tags, we associate them with a datastore/datastore clusters:
- Right-click on a datastore/datastore cluster and go to Tags & Custom Attributes | Assign Tag...:
- Select a tag from the Assign Tag window to be associated with the datastore/datastore cluster:
This completes the process of defining storage capabilities using vCenter tags and associating them with datastores.
