Lasso the Leaders (page 15)

Circle the questions that are badly worded, and explain why.

B. WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS LATE FOR WORK?

F. WHY DON’T YOU FLOSS MORE?

B uses the extreme word “always,” which is unlikely true. Both B and F make it sound like you’re accusing the people you’re interviewing of being unhealthy or irresponsible, which will make them uncomfortable and may affect their answers. For example, people who are feeling defensive may say that they floss more often than they really do, so they don’t appear to have unhealthy habits.

C. TELL ME WHY YOU LIKE THIS PAINTING.

D. WHAT MAKES JENNIFER LAWRENCE SUCH A GREAT ACTOR?

If the person has already said before this that she likes the painting, or that she thinks Jennifer Lawrence is a great actor, then these questions are good. If she hasn’t, though, you’re making an assumption about how she feels when you ask these questions. She may not like the painting at all, and may not agree that Jennifer Lawrence is a great actor - but to be polite she’s unlikely to disagree with you when the question assumes she does.
