PART II

Using the Successive Approximation Model

When used by teams to develop courses of instruction, the successive approximation model (SAM) has an uncanny ability to both foster creative designs and manage the work to fit time and cost constraints. Perhaps the most important advantage of SAM is its ability to simultaneously reach these two often-conflicting goals.

Part II provides a more detailed look at successive approximation in application for the design and development of larger projects. Because SAM is commonly used to handle the complexities of e-learning, we give some special attention to its use for e-learning design and development; however, SAM is of great advantage for designing and developing all forms of instructional delivery, simple to complex, technology-assisted or not.
