Constraints

Constraints split the search-space into regions of feasible and infeasible candidate solutions. For instance, an engineering problem could have a mathematical model that should be optimized, but producing the solution in the real world puts some constraints on what is feasible. There are different ways of supporting and handling constraints in heuristic optimization.
