8.6. Exam Essentials

Describe the four elements that comprise the Common Manageability Infrastructure (CMI). Be able to name the individual elements of the CMI and the functionality that they offer: the AWR, server-generated alerts, automated routine maintenance tasks, and the advisory framework.

Understand the functionality provided by the advisors. Be aware of the names of the available advisors: the Segment Advisor, the Undo Advisor, the SQL Tuning Advisor, the SQL Access Advisor, and the Memory Advisor and its subadvisors. Understand the role that advisors play in the CMI. Be able to describe the functionality provided by each.

Understand the usage of the common advisor interface. Be able to create, delete, execute, interrupt and resume advisor tasks. Be able to update task parameters. Understand that advisors produce recommendations. Know how to view recommendations.

Describe the functionality of the SQL Tuning Advisor. Be able to describe the SQL Tuning Optimizer. Understand the types of analysis performed on SQL statements. Be able to describe SQL Tuning Sets.

Be aware of the advisor views. Be able to identify the advisor views. Be aware of the naming convention to which they adhere.

Be able to identify the new statistics in Oracle 10g. Be aware of the new time-based statistics and operating system statistics. Understand the importance of each.

Understand metrics and thresholds. Be able to describe metrics and their usage. Understand the purpose of metric thresholds and how to set them.
